The Big Problem! is the first episode of Season 1, and the first regular episode of The Fairly OddParents television series.

Synopsis[]

Timmy gets a quick lesson in “be careful what you wish for” when he wishes to be a grown-up. Rather than becoming the strapping, taller, muscular, older Timmy of his dreams, he turns into a short, bald, hairy-backed, middle-aged man! The episode is a life lesson to make the most out of your childhood.

Plot[]

While at school, Timmy Turner is picked on by Francis, the school bully, because he is too small. At football tryouts, Timmy's position is that of "being the ball," due to his size. At home, Timmy's parents are going out to a movie which he is not old enough to see, thus leaving him with Vicky, who forces Timmy to go to bed at early. In his room, Timmy thinks of all of the things that he can do as an adult before wishing he was one. After the wish is granted, he is disgusted to find he is old and lost all his hair. He wishes that he had hair on his head, but Wanda is unable to grant it as Da Rules prohibit the granting of wishes to adults.

Despite his appearance, Timmy tries various adult activities, such as driving, helping old ladies cross the street, watching adult movies, and shaving, all to various negative outcomes. Determined to find an advantage to being an adult, Timmy goes to a restaurant and orders food, but does not have any money to pay the bill and has to work at the restaurant for the rest of the night. He tries to go home, but Vicky, not recognizing Timmy and mistaking him for an intruder, kicks him out. She then goes upstairs to check on Timmy to find that, much to her shock, he is gone. When Timmy's parents come home, Vicky fools them by putting a pink hat on a basketball on the pillow of Timmy's bed before leaving to find Timmy out of fear of getting in trouble.

Timmy turns into an adult.

Banned from his own home, Timmy sleeps in the bleachers at the football field. The next day, Timmy tries to stop Francis from bullying Chester and A.J., but is framed for child abuse when Francis cries crocodile tears in front of the police. They chase Timmy down, until Cosmo and Wanda hide him from the police. Afterwards, a reassigning fairy declares that Cosmo and Wanda are to be re-assigned to another kid since Timmy is no longer a kid. However, Timmy bribes the fairy with five dollars to spend two more hours with Cosmo and Wanda. Timmy then comes up with an idea: maybe if he acts like a kid, he can become a kid again.

Timmy tries various childhood activities, such as mini-golf and riding kiddy rides at the Burb Mart, but none of them seem to work. Timmy finds Vicky and is beat by her before being arrested. The reassignment fairy comes back and says that someone has to be assigned to the new kid, causing Timmy to throw a tantrum and want his parents. Using a thermometer in Timmy's ear to measure his childishness, Wanda determines that Timmy is becoming a kid again, and explains to him that wanting his parents is making him have the mind of a kid again. With Cosmo and Wanda able to listen to him again, Timmy wishes that he was a kid again. The wish works, and the reassigning fairy ends up getting reassigned to the other kid. Timmy gets out of jail and goes home with Vicky, who was at the police station filing a lost child report.

Timmy turns back to normal.

When he goes back to school, Francis bullies Timmy again, but Timmy, who is no hurry to grow up, is not bothered by Francis and realizes that being a kid is great, especially since he still has all of his hair and none of it is on his back. After seeing Francis' back hair, Timmy gives him a razor and shaving cream, with Francis being excited to shave only to experience the same pain Timmy did earlier. Timmy and his godparents then laugh at Francis, ending the episode.
