This article is about Peri in A New Wish. For information on him in the original series, see Poof.
“ | Hey kid. I'm Poof. Well, at least I was. I changed my name to Peri! Like- Periwinkle? Check the threads, huh? | ” |
— Peri, introducing himself to Dev Dimmadome |
Periwinkle "Peri" Fairywinkle-Cosma (born Poof) is the tetartagonist of The Fairly OddParents: A New Wish alongside his parents Cosmo and Wanda as part of the main cast. Unlike his parents, Peri presents a smooth, charismatic personality. He is also, at times, neurotic and impatient with spoiled wishes. Peri is voiced by Eric Bauza in A New Wish.
Peri made a big return in A New Wish, after being absent in "Beast of Friends" and Fairly Odder, starting in the episode "Lost and Founder's Day", with him being now an adult, going by the name "Peri", and serving the role of Dev Dimmadome's godparent.
Character[]
Poof, in the original show, is the adorable baby son of Cosmo and Wanda, and the fairy godbrother of Timmy and Chloe. He was introduced in the episode "Fairly Odd Baby", being wished up by Timmy when Cosmo and Wanda were desperate for a child of their own.
In The Fairly OddParents: A New Wish, he tells Dev Dimmadome that he now goes by the name "Peri." As an adult, Peri generally displays a cool, confident, charismatic kind of personality. As he gets to know Dev is subject to his overbearing and spoiled demeanor, a more anxious, neurotic side of Peri starts to show. He is also shown to be somewhat embarrassed by his parents' overtly affectionate behavior towards him and, though he loves them back the same, he clearly wants to be independent from them.
Description[]
Baby Poof has one dark purple hair tress and purple eyes. He wears a light purple shirt with a black "X", and white slippers. He was the only fairy baby in existence at the time, and still remains as the youngest known fairy.
In "The Fairly OddParents: A New Wish, Peri has periwinkle hair matching his new name, and a hairstyle that combines those of his parents', being a shaggier version of Wanda’s signature hair swirl. He now wears suspenders and has a new wand that doubles as a cane. It has a round cover over its star-shaped head that makes it somewhat resemble his rattle "wand" from the original show.
Personality[]
He is depicted as sweet, kind and childish, so he’s still very positive in what to expect out of people (although there are exceptions). Since he was only a baby and typically could only say his name, yet other characters were easily charmed by him, even Vicky's cold heart was momentarily melted by him in "Wishology." Only Foop seems to be aware that Poof is just repeating his name when they competed against each other for Class President at Spellementary School, and Poof's "speech" consisted of him doing just that, yet he was able to win over his classmates easily. This same incident also occurred in "Love Triangle" when Poof was able to out-act Foop for the role of Mr. Cookie in the school play, by once again simply repeating his name. This is also seen in "Timmy's Secret Wish" when he could get Timmy a retrial when Foop could not. In "School of Crock," Poof starts speaking fully for the first time after trying to throughout the episode. Before this, he could say one or two words at a time. Poof loves impersonating celebrities, some include Elvis, Trump, and the Terminator.
As an adult, Peri initially seems to have a rather smooth and charming personality, but as he becomes more familiar with Dev's spoiled and demanding personality, he develops more of a neurotic and slightly sarcastic behavior. He keeps trying to influence Dev into being a better kid, but his advice often falls on deaf ears. It's also shown that he wants to be independent from his parents and that he's sometimes annoyed by their clingy and oblivious behavior, but he nonetheless still loves them. Despite his flaws and issues with being a godparent (no doubt due to his inexperience, as Dev was the first godkid he ever godparented for on his own and, in Wanda's words, Dev was a doozy of a child for someone's first job), he genuinely wanted to do a good job at it, partly to make his parents proud and partly because, in spite of their rocky relationship, he genuinely loved and cared for Dev and wanted to do right by him. He also appears to be a bit more down-to-earth and logical than his parents, sometimes even Wanda.
Powers[]
Like all fairies, Peri has access to reality-bending magic. Due to his youth, and presumably, lack of training, Peri's magic was initially uncontrollable, which is why he was sought to be captured by Anti-Cosmo and Head Pixie when he was first born. Also, Peri appears to have more than magical abilities, such as when he cries bad things happen, when he laughs good things happen, hiccups lead to natural disasters, burping leads to lightning and breaking the wind resets reality, similar to exaggerated time control. While as Poof's anti-fairy opposite Foop's "abilities" haven't been fully shown with the exception of good phenomena happening when crying and hiccups lead to nothing.
As a adult, Poof goes by the name "Peri" and his rattle-like wand has been replaced by a cane-like wand that now can grant normal wishes like his parents can.
Background[]
Birth[]
Peri was first born in the special, "Fairly Odd Baby" when Timmy Turner wished that his godparents would have a child together (since they really want to have a baby because they were paying attention to babies more than Timmy when he was doing one of his wishes). After a few months, he was finally born. In the beginning, his most notable spoken word is "Poof", which Timmy decides upon as his name. Other magic races like the Pixies and Anti-Fairies sought to capture Peri to harness his uncontrolled magic for their own nefarious deeds. The first season that Peri appeared, he was mostly like a baby: dependent, relying on Cosmo, Wanda, and Timmy for everything; and crying all the time (because he was in Cosmo's baby bump).
By the next season, Poof's magical abilities have improved to the point where he can grant wishes, sometimes even if Timmy doesn't really want them granted. Poof got himself in a myriad of adventures this time, including catching the Chicken Poofs and turning everyone in Dimmsdale into chickens, taking a trip to Yugopotamia, and helping Timmy Turner and his team the Dimmsdale Victims win their way to the soccer championship.
Spellementary School[]
- Main article: Spellementary School (location)
Near the end of Season 7, Poof began to attend Spellementary School, a pre-school for magical species where they learn how to control their magic powers. Poof's teacher is a friendly fairy woman named Mrs. Powers, and all of Poof's classmates adore him with the exception of Foop, who’s also attending and constantly competing with Poof for attention and popularity.
Teenager Life[]
As a teenager, Poof started to go through Pasta Puberty, an experience where older fairies start to feel change in their body, like Pesctopits, Anipasto Acne, and Mozzarella Mood Swings. In the episode "Growing Pains", he is seen watching the news and exclaims he did not miss experiencing Pasta Puberty.
Adult Life[]
- Main article: The Fairly OddParents: A New Wish
Poof appears at the end of the episode "Lost and Founder's Day", intoducing himself and reveals he has changed his name to Peri, telling Dev Dimmadome that he got chosen to be his new fairy godchild, telling Dev he can take him from "Dev" to "Dev-vine".
In the episode "Battle of the Dimmsonian", Peri is easily neurotic around Dev, yelling at him for wanting a perfect instead of a specific cupcake. At the Dimmsonian Museum, Peri sees his parents but is nervous about how they will react to him being a godparent and tries to keep low. After Viozalia is released, Peri bumps into his parents, who are shocked that he has a godkid. Peri, Cosmo, and Wanda work together and use all their magic to banish Viozalia back to her realm. Cosmo and Wanda have a happy reunion with Peri in the aftermath with Cosmo and Wanda very proud of their son and Wanda informing Peri that Dev is a handful and they are there for Peri if he needs help.
In the episode "Lost in Fairy World", Peri is seen hanging out with his parents, who cuddle him, which causes him to be embarrassed by his parents' affection for him. Peri later gets his wand stolen by Dev, and works together with his parents to steal Jorgen Von Strangle's Wand Tracker. At the end of the episode, Peri apologizes to his parents and states that he just wanted to be independent. Cosmo and Wanda realize that Peri needs his own space and promise to give him space.
In the episode "Dig a Little Deeper", Peri is seen disguised as headphones on Dev's head, who criticizes him for not having a shiny wand like his parents. Peri insults him in asking why was Hazel's presentation better than his.
In the episode "Operation: Birthday Takeback", Peri welcomes his parents into Dev's home and gives them a tour of the mansion. They discover Dale Dimmadome has been investigating Hazel. Cosmo and surprisingly Wanda write 'FARIES ARE REAL' oh his whiteboard, which Peri is both disappointed and frustrated in. After Dev and Hazel make their way into Dale's room, they explain to them that Vicky is the birthday princess, which Peri is frightened by because he thought he imagined her as a baby. At the end of the episode, Peri asks Dev if he can do anything to cheer him up since it was still his birthday, to which Dev yelled at him and wished for Peri to leave him alone.
In "Best of Luck", Peri has had it with Dev and decides to quit after Dev was wishing for things against Da Rules. However, Peri was secretly spying on him and told Jorgen Von Strangle about Irep, which caused Peri to become Dev's fairy godparent again.
In "The Battle of Big Wand", Peri experiences Magical Build-up after Dev stops making wishes, which causes him to have a near-death experience. In the end, Peri is restored to normal after Jorgen Von Strangle strips Dev of his fairy godparent. He is last seen riding dirt bikes with his parents, Hazel, Antony, Winn, and Jasmine, only to break the 4th wall at the last minute upon realizing the season (and possibly the show as a whole) is ending with a fart joke. Leading to Peri hoping the show to get renewed for a second season following the low-brow ending.
Similarities to His Parents[]
Similarities to Cosmo[]
Appearance[]
The only similarities appearance-wise is that they are both male and that Poof has half of the eye color of Cosmo. (Cosmo's is green, which is made of blue and yellow, and Poof has the blue part)
As an adult, Peri gained Cosmo's hair spike and his eyebrows. Peri also has similar clothes to Cosmo only he wears dark purple suspenders.
Personality[]
They are very similar personality-wise. They both like violence. They both love red meat (shown in "Wishology!" with wieners and in "Scary GodCouple" and "Bad Heir Day" with rump roast.) Both Poof and Cosmo are very powerful fairies, but unlike Cosmo, Poof quickly learned how to control his magic with some assistance from Jorgen Von Strangle, and is a lot closer to Wanda's level of intelligence.
As an adult, Peri has a similar personality and voice to Cosmo from the pilot.
Similarities to Wanda[]
Appearance[]
He shares more of his appearance with Wanda than with Cosmo. He has Wanda's eyebrows and Wanda's eyelashes.
As a adult, Peri gained Wanda's hair swirl.
Personality[]
Personality-wise they don't have much in common. On occasion, Poof will be on Wanda's side when it comes to bad wishes. Poof is also a quick thinker and easily picks up on demands and their intended results. As an adult, Peri is a mix of both Wanda and Cosmo's personalities, gaining Wanda's sense of doubt as in Battle of the Dimmsonian, he tried to persuade Dev Dimmadome to give Viozalia back her staff to not start any trouble.
They do share a love of chocolate. Poof was shown to eat the brownies that Nana Boom Boom made in the episode, "Balance of Flour," and also ate all the Halloween candy in "Fairly Odd Fairy Tales," which was what made him not able to fall asleep.
Relationships[]
Peri and His Parents[]
Wanda is usually the one taking care of Poof and tending to his needs. Cosmo also has a hand in parenting in the episode, "Playdate of Doom," but otherwise is admittedly bad at parenting because he never went to school for it. Many times, when Poof is put in danger, Wanda will start to panic. Cosmo is more like a friend to Poof than a parent. Timmy, Poof's godbrother is usually very caring towards Poof. In "Bad Heir Day," Poof recognizes his dad when he saw him in the window. Poof loves both Cosmo and Wanda very much.
In "Battle of the Dimmsonian", after years of being apart, Peri quickly notices his parents and was worried about them finding out he has a godkid. Peri continued granting Dev's wishes and says his parents would be disappointed in him if his very first godkid gets obliterated by a demigod. Later in the episode, Peri runs into his parents, and they questioned him about having a fairy godkid, which he denied. Him and his parents worked together to banish Viozalia back to her dimension. At the end of the episode, his parents hugged him and told him his godkid was a real doozy.
Peri is shown to be somewhat embarrassed by his parents' overtly affectionate behavior towards him and wants to be independent from them, even though he still loves them.
Peri and Dev[]
When Peri first met Dev, he introduced himself and told him he could change him from "Dev" to "Dev-vine". Peri gets neurotic and anxious around Dev and wants him to be straight-forward with his wish. As seen in "Battle of the Dimmsonian", after Dev kept denying random cupcakes in favor for a perfect cupcake, Peri yelled at him and told him if he wanted perfection he might want to ask for a specific flavor.
In the episode "Operation Birthday Takeback", their relationship grew even worse, when Peri didn't respond when Dev needed his help. However, Dev did compliment him when he asked Hazel if her two fairies more important than his one fairy. At the end of the episode, Peri tried to cheer him up by asking if he wanted to wish for anything on his birthday, which Dev yelled at him and wished he could just be left alone.
In "Best of Luck", Peri has had it with Dev and decides to quit after he was wishing for things against Da Rules. However, Peri was secretly spying on him and told Jorgen Von Strangle about Irep, which caused Peri to become Dev's fairy godparent again.
In the episode "The Battle of Big Wand", Peri, along with Cosmo and Wanda are locked inside cages by Irep and Dev. Dev sadly cries after Cosmo and Wanda explain what Magical Build-up is, and Peri tells Dev that he cares about him because he is his first fairy godkid.
Peri and Irep[]
Although Poof and Foop are mortal enemies and complete opposites (generally Fairies and Anti-Fairies are enemies), they also attend the same school together and before Goldie Goldenglow's arrival, they appear to have even been developing a friendship. But in "School of Crock", after Poof gains the ability to talk and Foop apologizes for trying to destroy him and thanks him for saving him, Poof asks him if he wants to be friends, to which he swiftly declined. So even though the two aren’t friends, it seems like their continuous feud has finally come to an end. They even hang out in "Certifiable Super Sitter" when Poof, Foop and Sammy visit Timmy's house for spring break.
In the future, Poof changing his name to "Peri" forced it so that Foop had to change his name fo "Irep", which Foop does not find it easy to say. In the episode "Best of Luck", Peri decides to quit being a fairy godparent for Dev Dimmadome, which gave Irep an opportunity to become his new anti-fairy godparent. In the end, Irep is fooled by Peri when he confronts him and reveals he never actually left for good, and that he was secretly spying on them and reporting to Jorgen Von Strangle.
Peri and Hazel[]
Although the only interacted briefly once in Lost in Fairy World, the two have a good relationship. They first meet in "Battle of the Dimmsonian" after Dev releases Viozalia. In the following episodes, the two barely interact due to Hazel usually hanging out with Dev until they’re falling out in "Operation Birthday Takeback". However, Peri and Hazel still care for each other.
When Peri sees Hazel suffering Pasta Puberty in “Growing Pains”, Peri shows sympathy for her due to the terrible experience he had undergoing the same thing as a teenager. In "The Battle of Big Wand", Hazel shows extreme worry for Peri after Dev and Irep takeover Fairy World. She ends up both horrified and disgusted upon seeing Peri suffer from Magical Build-up and is relieved to see him recovered once Fairy World is returned to normal.
Despite their limited interactions, the two are on very good terms.
Trivia[]
- Poof was born on February 18, 2008 (according to a picture of his birth certificate from a promo of the episode Fairly Odd Baby.)
- Poof is still a baby, but his real-life age would be 16. This could be due to the characters not aging at all, which keeps Poof at his current age.
- The co-creator of A New Wish and voice of Hazel Wells, Ashleigh Crystal Hairston, stated on a post through her X account that the reason Poof's name was changed to Peri is because the word "poof" is a derogatory slur for gay men in the UK and many countries and can’t be used. [1]
