Sea cucumber!
Mr. Turner

"Old Man and the C-" is the twenty-eighth episode of Season 7.

Synopsis[]

After failing miserably on a television program called Are You Brighter Than a 6th Grader? by answering "Sea Cucumber" to nearly all the questions, Mr. Turner reveals he dropped out of school in 5th grade when a kid named Melvin said he was "too cool for school". Fearing that this will possibly rub off on his son, Mrs. Turner forces her husband to go back to school, and Mr. Turner ends up in Mr. Crocker's class with Timmy! At first, he works hard to graduate from Dimmsdale Elementary School and make his son proud, but after he meets Melvin (now a janitor) and he tells him he's still "too cool for school", Mr. Turner's attendance starts to slip, and Timmy must convince his father to finish school and make his family proud.

Young Mr. Turner and Melvin.

Mr. Turner competes on the game show Are You Brighter Than a 6th Grader?, where he is asked questions to test his knowledge. He misses the first two questions by answering "Sea cucumber!" and for the third one, to which "sea cucumber" was the real answer, he says "Neil Armstrong!" Viewers across the world laugh at him. On the Turners' way out of the television studio, Timmy asks how his father could be so ignorant, and learns that he never went to sixth grade. A boy named Melvin had told him he was "too cool for school", and he took it literally and left school forever. Timmy takes this as an excuse to drop out of school himself, but Mrs. Turner says no to this and adds that Mr. Turner needs to finish his education to be a good role model for Timmy.

The next day, Mr. Turner starts attending Timmy's classes, since it happens that Timmy is in fifth grade. Mr. Crocker fires an F at him almost on sight, but after Mr. Turner gives him a box from the lifetime supply of macaroni he got as a consolation prize on the game show, he declares him his new favorite student out of gratitude. Through his oral reports, Mr. Turner becomes the most popular student in the class, to the point that Chester, Sanjay, and Elmer like him better than Timmy. During lunchtime, Mr. Turner takes the boys to his car so they can go get ice cream. Melvin, now a janitor, sees him and tells him he is "still too cool for school". Mr. Turner again misunderstands and goes back to skipping class. Over the next several days, he and Timmy's old friends spend their time outside wooing girls, drinking ice cream sodas, and covering the Turners' house with toilet paper. Mrs. Turner learns from Crocker that her husband is in danger of failing school, and she tells Timmy he will have to get a job to get the money to replace the toilet paper Mr. Turner has wasted.

Crocker tells Timmy the only way his father can still pass is by completing the never-before-passed Big Super Test, and he agrees to let him take it in exchange for the whole macaroni supply. Mr. Turner does not care to take the test, however, saying that "education's for dweebs". Timmy gives him a stern talk about how he is making the same mistake he made in his childhood and how his behavior as of late is not making him proud. Mr. Turner bursts into tears and decides Timmy is right.

After rigorous training with Timmy's help, Mr. Turner takes the Big Super Test before an audience in the Dimmsdale Dimmadome and does well enough to pass well past fifth grade. To graduate high school altogether, he has to answer one last question: "What undersea vegetable would taste great in an undersea salad?" He gives it some serious thought for some moments before finally shouting "Sea cucumber!" Mr. Turner earns his high school diploma, and he and Timmy celebrate the win by toilet-papering their own house. Melvin shows up again and says they are "too cool for school" and they beat him up.
