Merpeople are humanoid species that have the top half of a human and the bottom half of a fish. These species were prominent as far back as the ancient epic of the Enuma Elish and were long since a prominent part of European folklore. Females are mermaids and males are mermen.
Merpeople also exist in the Fairly OddParents universe, though at a much smaller scale. They are the main inhabitants of the underwater city of Atlantis, which appeared twice under different kings. The first appearance of a mermaid was in a brief scene in the second part of Abra-Catastrophe, where Denzel Crocker turns one of his students into a mermaid.
Physiology[]
Merpeople as depicted in the season 5 episode Something's Fishy! are similar to traditional depictions in popular culture, with the primary difference being that their ears resemble those of an elf or dwarf. Timmy Turner (as Timmy Turntrout) was the exception. Most merpeople, such as King Greg, have green tailfins, though other colors have been spotted, namely purple, orange and to a lesser extent, yellow, red and blue. They carry a sort of golden belt with a shell in their waists and golden armbands (not only used by King Greg but also by the Atlanteans). Most including King Greg wear golden earrings.
As with most depictions, males are depicted barechested, while females only wear a seashell bra.
Powers and abilities[]
- Telekinesis
- Breathing underwater and also in the surface: Timmy Turner in his merman form (Timmy Turntrout), King Greg and Poseidon do that
- Slugwalking in the surface world: as evidenced by King Greg towards the end of Something's Fishy!
