Plot[]

Timmy wants a pet after realizing that everyone in Dimmsdale has a pet except for him, but when his parents turn him down due to being a terrible pet owner, he adopts Sparky, a mischievous fairy dog from the Fairy World pet store, where Jorgen Von Strangle warns him to care of him properly. At first, Timmy is estatic to finally have own cool pet, but as time passes, he begins to learn the hard way just why Sparky is hard of a pet to take care of.

Synopsis[]

The episode starts off showing various citizens of Dimmsdale with their pets, one of whom is tough-looking guy who appears to have a vicious looking bulldog but actually has a cute little poodle -- we then see Timmy driving around on a scooter with his fairies, and Timmy takes notice of how he's seemingly the only person in Dimmsdale that doesn't have a pet of their own, noting how Mr. Crocker has a pet parrot (that mimics his "Fairies!" spasms) as well as how even Mr. Turner has a pet rock (that appears to be somehow sentient).

Timmy feels it's unfair that he doesn't have a pet -- while she understands why her godson feels the way he does, Wanda quickly points out that he doesn't exactly have the track record when it comes to animals. Timmy, of course, denies this and asks his godmother for proof of her claims -- in response, Wanda turns out the TV in Timmy's bedroom, which starts playing a documentary from a miniseries titled "Timmy Turner: World's Worst Pet Owner," which (of course) brings various mishaps that Timmy's had with past pets, such as:

  • Feeding his pet chicken scrambled eggs (which Cosmo claims could've been the chicken's baby).
  • Giving his pet mouse a pet cat to play with (the cat raises its paw with its claws out, obviously indicating that it killed the mouse).
  • Taking his pet snail on a field trip to the Dimmsdale Salt Factory (which also shows Timmy freaking out over the empty shell at the end of the tour).

Ultimately, Wanda says that Timmy simply isn't responsible enough to handle having a pet -- she also figures that his parents probably won't let him have a pet of his own. Timmy tries proving her wrong, but when he goes downstairs to try and convince his parents to let him have a dog, Mr. and Mrs. Turner deny their son's request (just like Wanda predicted). Later on, Timmy comes up with a plan to convince his parents to let him have a dog: noting how his mom's allergic to cats, he has his godfamily poof up enough cats to fill up the Turner house to trigger his mom's allergies and convince Timmy's dad to let him get a dog to chase them away. This ends up working (albeit not quite in the way that Timmy was expecting), so Timmy's fairies ultimately take him to a pet store to find a dog to adopt.

Cosmo, Wanda and Poof take Timmy to a pet store in Fairy World, which surprises Timmy -- Wanda explains that it's because Timmy's banned from all the regular pet stores back home. While looking around the pet store, they're surprised to Jorgen Van Strangle working there (he claims to be filling in for a relative of his who works at the store) but explain their situation to him. Timmy soon stumbles a cage covered by a blanket -- when he pulls off the blanket, it's revealed that a magical fairy dog named Sparky is in there. Timmy and Sparky immediately take a liking to each other and Timmy, of course, wants to adopt Sparky -- Jorgen's a bit hesitant, claiming that Sparky's a lot of work and has even been brought back to the pet store more times than Cosmo (we then see Cosmo trying to chase/bite his butt like how a dog would for their tail, to which Wanda claims, "Sometimes I just get overwhelmed"). Timmy begs Jorgen to let him adopt Sparky and Jorgen agrees (but only because his shift is almost over) -- before leaving the pet store, Jorgen gives some supplies for Sparky (like a leash, a collar and some dog treats). Before heading back home, Jorgen gives Timmy some magic flea powder and advises him to make sure to put it on Sparky at least every four hours.

Timmy sees Sparky at the pet store.

Upon arriving back in Timmy's bedrooms, Sparky's excited about his new home and his new owners and shows off some of the tricks that he knows. Later on, while playing videogames in the living room, Timmy introduces Sparky to Mr. Turner (who's disguised as a lamp) -- Sparky soon chases all the cats that Timmy wished up at the beginning of the episode out of the Turner residence, which relieves Mr. Turner. Sparky also shows off some tricks to Timmy's dad, which also impresses Mr. Turner. Later that night, Timmy and his fairies (including Sparky) are hanging out in Timmy's bedroom when Vicky comes by to take her anger out on him after getting into a fight with her boyfriend, Justin Jake Ashton. Sparky protects Timmy from his abusive babysitter, and, in the end, Wanda decides that Timmy was right about it being a good idea to get a dog. Everybody gets ready for bed, and Timmy questions why any of Sparky's previous owners would return him.

The next morning, Timmy and his fairies notice that the house is somehow underground -- Sparky (who claims that fairy dogs don't need to sleep) explains that he was up all night doing "dog stuff," including doing a lot of digging. Timmy wishes his how back up to the surface, and when he and Sparky go downstairs, it turns out that Sparky carpeted the hardwood floors of the house and chewed up most of the furniture. And upon going outside, Timmy notices that Sparky (who claims to have "really been in the zone" the previous night) dug holes and wreaked all kinds of havoc all over Dimmsdale -- he tries getting his fairies to poof everything back to normal, but Wanda claims that Sparky buried their wands during his rampage last night. When Sparky starts scratching himself, it turns out that he's got fleas -- Wanda asks Timmy if he remembered to give Sparky the magical flea powder like Jorgen said to, which Timmy admits that he didn't. Timmy doesn't see what the big deal is, but Wanda claims that the fleas Sparky are magical and could cause some serious issues if they were to bite humans -- and it soon turns out that if humans are bit by magical fleas, they get turned into humanoid dog creatures.

Seeing this, Timmy tells Sparky to find Cosmo, Wanda and Poof's wands that he buried, but Sparky can't seem to find them -- a news segment from Chet Ubetcha reveals that dog hairs is clogging all the drains in the city and a dog grooming studio is getting record business due to all the dog creatures in Dimmsdale. Chet Ubetcha himself is soon bitten by one of the magical fleas and runs off from his newscast -- when the gang is back in Timmy's bedroom, they're confront by Vicky (now a dog-person) again. Sparky protects Timmy just like he did before, but this time, the box of magic flea powder that Jorgen had given to Timmy falls onto Vicky, turning her back to normal. Once Vicky's out of the room again like before, the gang realizes that they can use the flea powder to everyone in Dimmsdale back to normal. And when they see that Mr. Turner has built a crop duster plane (to use in his antics against their next-door, Sheldon Dinkleburg), Timmy asks if he borrow it to dump flea powder on everyone in Dimmsdale -- Mr, Turner agrees to this (as long as he himself doesn't have to go with Timmy).

Timmy and Sparky fly off across the city, spreading the magic flea powder all over everyone and turning them back to normal. But Timmy soon realizes that he doesn't know how to fly a plane and things get ever worse when he accidentally destroys the steering wheel (which causes him to snark that his dad doesn't know to build a plane). When Sparky stupidly takes the only parachute to see if it works, Timmy's planes end up flying into a public pool. Cosmo, Wanda and Poof soon come by and Timmy admits to them that he's starting to have second thoughts about getting a dog, as he's realizing that Sparky is in fact a lot of work, just like Jorgen had said -- Timmy decides that he's got two options: 1.) Take Sparky back to the Fairy World Pet Store, or 2.) Go on vacation forever. Sparky (who landed safely thanks to the parachute) happens to overhear what Timmy tells his fairies and walks off sadly.

Upon returning to Timmy's bedroom, the gang notices a trail of muddy pawprints and chewed up furniture leading to the TV while Wanda finds a DVD labeled with "play me" on Timmy's bed. They put the DVD into the TV and it soon starts playing a video made by Sparky -- Sparky apologizes for causing so much trouble for Timmy and claims that he's now planning on going away forever but wanted to leave the DVD (titled "Timmy Turner: World's Best Pet Owner") for Timmy, as it contains all of his favorite moments during the brief time they were together. After the video finishes playing, Timmy feels bad for how he acted, realizing that he was too hard on Sparky when he was just being a normal (fairy) dog. They soon turn on the TV again, this time playing a newscast from a back-to-normal Chet Ubetcha, who reveals that all the dog hair from when the people of Dimmsdale got turned into dog creatures had caused so much clogging in the city's drains that pipes are backing up everywhere and if things don't get fixed soon, the Dimmsdale Dam will burst and flood the city

Upon hearing this, Wanda claims that the Turner residence will be the first to be destroyed, since the Dimmsdale Dam is literally in their backyard (as a result of Cosmo calls "Timmy Turner's Week of Really Stupid Wishes"). Timmy and the fairies rush outside and end up finding Sparky, who claims that he wanted to say goodbye in person before leaving forever. But before he can play the song her wrote, he gets washed away by a wave of water from the dam -- Timmy jumps in to save Sparky and soon takes him to a small island. At first, it seems like Sparky didn't make it, but it turns out that (thanks to being immortal like Timmy's godfamily) Sparky's okay -- Sparky notes that Timmy was nuts to jump in after him like that. The boy and the dog share a hug, and Timmy apologizes for giving up on him too quickly, claiming that he'll never do it again.

Chet Ubetcha (floating by in a barrel of hotdogs) notes how the town was destroyed but (in less depressing news) also notes how Timmy Turner saved his dog from the floods and acknowledges that the boy might not actually be that bad of a pet owner. When Chet asks Timmy for his dog's name, Sparky proudly states "My name's Sparky!," which causes Chet to claim that Sparky barks funny.

Cosmo, Wanda and Poof soon come by and are relieved to see that Timmy and Sparky are okay -- their wands soon float by as well. The fairies grab their wands and Timmy wishes for everything to back to normal. The episode ultimately ends with Timmy and Spark walking off into the sunset.

Reception[]

YouTube animation critic TheMysteriousMrEnter was outspoken against this episode in his 69th Animated Atrocities video; he heavily criticized Sparky's unlikability, voice and personality. He also criticized the joke with salt and snails, as well as the plot holes throughout the episode (in particular the oddities regarding Cosmo and Wanda's wands after Sparky dug the house downwards).
