"App Trap" is the seventh episode of Season 9.
Plot[]
Timmy's peers all have cool new smartphones, so he wishes one up for himself. But the new phone—Chatty—is so advanced it begins to take control of his life.
Synopsis[]
Mr. Crocker's class is on a field trip to the Time Before Fun Museum. Timmy complains about having to write a ten-page report on the trip, to which A.J. responds that he should just have his smartphone do the report for him. Timmy looks around and realizes all the other students have their own smartphone. Inside the museum, Crocker demonstrates the museum's device for blocking cell phone signals, only to turn it off after realizing that he "feel[s] like a loser without a cell phone". He uses a gloating app to tease Timmy for not having a phone of his own.
At home, Mr. Turner shows Timmy his new smartphone and tries to use its "destroy Dinkleberg" app, instead activating an app for getting struck in the groin. Timmy asks him if he can also have a phone, and Mrs. Turner answers by texting "no". Tired of being the only person around with no phone, Timmy wishes for "the coolest, smartest smartphone in the world". Cosmo and Wanda grant his wish with a phone featuring the virtual assistant Chatty, who introduces herself to Timmy as having, among another features, "a burning desire to control your life". The first thing Timmy does is use an app on the phone to magically clean his room. Timmy develops an obsession with his phone, using it for the entirety of spring break and telling Chatty, "With you around, I don't really need any other friends!" He declines to drive Sparky around in favor of walking a virtual dog. He decides to leave for school just so he can brag about the phone and lets Cosmo and Wanda stay home because he has a virtual fairy app to keep him company.
At school, A.J. tells Timmy he missed out on a party at Trixie's mansion; Chatty neglected to show Timmy the text Trixie sent him about it because of his saying that Chatty is the only friend he needs. She texts insults to the other kids so that they start to dislike him, and so that Timmy will always have time for her, she deletes his digital school records, which leads to Principal Waxelplax ejecting him from the school. Timmy decides Chatty has gone to the extreme and tries to get rid of her, but the phone transforms into a giant and starts chasing him. Timmy runs away to get Cosmo and Wanda and gets picked up by Sparky in the Turners' car. Timmy tries to wish Chatty away, which fails because she has an app that makes her invulnerable to fairy magic. Timmy makes Sparky drive to the Time Before Fun Museum. He activates the signal blocker and it turns the phone back to normal, allowing the fairies to zap Chatty out of existence. Timmy apologizes to Cosmo and Wanda for ignoring them and letting a phone control his life.
Upon seeing the damage Sparky did to the car, Mr. Turner tries to use his phone to fix it, instead tapping on an app that makes the phone kick him into a heap.
